The military by inclination is not trained to rule but to defend. However, when the situation arises which brings them into the corridors of power, it becomes an aberration. Although, the various controversial military coup might be undesirable but it was not unexpected. It might have done some harm to the Nigeria political development as well as her armed forces, yet it recorded some successes. It is in this wise that this paper in the main, examines the impact of coups and military rule on Nigeria and her armed forces. Furthermore, it contends that, military coup was not a total failure and disaster but the resultant effects are quite devastating.
