HOW LANGUAGE DEFINES THE WORLD: ANALYZING A WITTGENSTEINIAN PERSPECTIVE

ANTHONY KWAKU BOAKYE, Ph.D. NANCY OPPONGWAA MYLES, Ph.D.
Abstract

Wittgenstein's philosophy reveals a continuous evolution of ideas rather than a stark divide between his early and later works. A harmonized study unveils an intricate connection between language and human life in his works. His insight that language is not merely a static system but an active, dynamic force, embedded in cultural and social practices that shape our understanding of the world, provides a more nuanced and accurate account of linguistic meaning. Together, he provides a comprehensive and realistic perspective on language that offers flexibility to meaning and addresses much philosophical confusion. This paper explores his arguments in some detail. First, it examines the grammar of language and how it shapes our understanding of the world. Second, it analyses Wittgenstein's “picture theory” of language in his early work, where language is seen as mirroring reality, and his later, more practical approach. Finally, it explores the significance of language in contemporary society.
