Abstract

Contemporary societies are confronted with complex challenges, including climate change, environmental degradation, persistent poverty, widening social inequalities, rapid technological change, and the continued exclusion of vulnerable groups. These challenges have intensified calls for educational systems that are not only responsive to changing societal needs but also capable of promoting sustainable development. This paper examines the role of philosophy in navigating educational change for sustainable societies, with particular emphasis on its implications for curriculum development, educational psychology, and special needs education. Adopting a philosophical and analytical approach, the paper draws on the insights of the Enlightenment, Pragmatism, Humanism, and Critical Pedagogy to demonstrate how philosophical inquiry provides the intellectual and ethical foundation for rethinking educational goals, policies, and practices. It argues that sustainable education extends beyond the transmission of knowledge to the cultivation of critical thinking, ethical responsibility, environmental stewardship, emotional well-being, social justice, and respect for human diversity. The paper further contends that curriculum should promote interdisciplinary and community-based learning, educational psychology should prioritize learners' holistic development, and special needs education should embrace inclusive practices that ensure equitable participation for all learners. It concludes that philosophy remains indispensable to educational transformation because it provides the values, principles, and critical perspectives needed to build educational systems that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the demands of sustainable societies.
