The humanities have, from the inception of education, played significant roles in the process of civilization and development. They remained the foundation of the development of humans and their society. They fed and nurtured the society. When the society felt it had found its footing, it started relegating them to the background and humanity started drifting out of its bounds towards the transhuman frontiers. This implies that there cannot be any meaningful development without a human face. What determines the human face remains the essence of the humanities. The humanities have guided developments in societies. Their contributions are part of what has kept humans and their society today. These are immeasurable contributions. In the face of such relegations and abandonment, rethinking and reintroducing the concept of arête as the foundation of the training of future leaders and drivers of development in Africa remains an imperative. The life of arête ensures the necessary discipline to drive development for the common good. Most African leaders abhor and lack the life of arête which is a conditio sine qua non for development. This has become our albatross vis-à-vis African development. The humanities remain the wheels of arête. This is one of the routes back to sanity in African leadership and development.
