IN PERSONA CHRISTI CAPITIS: A THEOLOGICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL INQUIRY INTO THE GENDER OF THE CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD

OVIE, Valentine Aghoghophia, PhD
Abstract

The Catholic Church's discipline of a male-only priesthood is one of its most contentious and misunderstood teachings. Standard discourse typically pits appeals to equality and pastoral necessity against arguments from authority and tradition, resulting in a persistent theological stalemate. This paper proposes a decisive exit from this impasse by relocating the entire debate to a more fundamental level: the nature of sacramental signs themselves. It asks not whether women can be priests, but what the priesthood is within the divine economy. Through a rigorous methodological synthesis of scriptural exegesis, historical analysis, and systematic theology, the research constructs its case from the ground up, beginning with first principles of metaphysics and culminating in high Christology. It engages the strongest objections with intellectual charity before unveiling a positive thesis that challenges the very premises of the modern debate. The findings suggest that the answer to this contemporary controversy lies not in the modern concepts of rights and roles, but in the ancient and enduring language of nuptial mystery, symbolic participation, and iconic representation. For any scholar seeking a resolution beyond the well-worn patterns of argumentation, this article offers a profound and paradigm-shifting examination of the theological foundations at stake.
