Undoubtedly, terrorism poses the greatest danger to world peace and stability today. The prevalence of terrorism has been steadily rising since the start of this millennium. Undoubtedly, both Nigeria and Africa have seen the globalization of terrorism. The Boko Haram insurgency has emerged in Nigeria in particular as a result of the problem. Since its inception, the sectarian insurgency has caused tremendous damage in the nation, particularly by "using bombs and firearms with grisly, lethal" results. This study aimed to examine the historical development of Boko Haram activities in the Northeastern Nigeria while considering its causes and effect on the Nation. This is a review article that is mostly based on research works such as theses, dissertations, research journals, newspapers, and magazines. Hence, an ex-postfacto research design was adopted in study. The findings of the study demonstrated that the Boko Haram insurgency was caused by radical religious convictions, unemployment, and illiteracy amongst other factors. The study further recommended that the government should focus on ways for engaging the massive number of idle youths who are easily tempted by terrorists. Also, to combat misconceptions about terrorism and western education, the government should mobilize apparatus at the municipal, traditional, and youth levels.
