The aim of this research is to critically examine the term digitalization, and how social media has effected generation Z and contributed negatively to the erosion of traditional family values in Nigeria. In this digital era, technological advances have offered new chances for people to engage and communicate with one another. In fact, it is not an over statement to say that technology is the number one engine of prosperity. However, these technologies at the same time have introduced new difficulties, as certain formerly prohibited behaviours like homo sexual, Masturbation, pre-marital sex, occultism, cyber bullying, drug abuse, absent minded etc., have become common due to social media’s widespread use. The findings reveal that while the advent of the digital age has brought unprecedented changes in the way Gen Z interacts and perceives the world, it has also contributed to the erosion of essential traditional family values and norms that have long been the cornerstone of societal cohesion. The views and values of today’s youth are radically and unexpectedly different from those of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations due to the events and situations they are exposed to. The questions that propel this work are; Are morals and values really declining in Nigeria? Does embracing digital technology means abandoning our cultural values? Is globalization a blessing or curse to Nigerians? Employing the method of critical analysis, this paper argues that the rise of social media and the use of Smart phones have created a false sense of connection, exposed families to different cultures and values, and a culture of individualism, leading Gen Z’s to a blurring of traditional family values and a loss of cultural identity. This paper concludes that digital technology should be harnessed to enhance our cultural preservation, promoting innovation that aligns with our traditions and practices.
