AFRICAN IDENTITY: A CRITICAL PROJECT IN A HISTORICAL IDENTITY RECONSTRUCTION

Abstract

In the digital age, epitomized in artificial intelligence, the discovery, building and or rebuilding of African identity necessitates a conscious engagement with historical reconstruction. Historical reconstruction remains a process of deconstruction via construction which reinterprets the past to redefine the present for the future. However, the enduring legacy of colonialism, amidst other imperial frameworks typified in coloniality and globalization have fragmented the African person especially his self-worth or self-conception, often to the advantage of all forms of Eurocentricism, that is privileging Western epistemologies, with their Eurocentric models, while marginalizing indigenous knowledge systems and all forms of Afrocetricism. Digital technologies, however, provide an unprecedented opportunity for Africans to reclaim and reconstruct their identity through historical reconstruction. This is achievable by reconnecting with historical narratives, cultural heritage and philosophical traditions. Using the method of historico-critical analysis, this paper argues and finds out that historical reconstruction is essential for fostering an authentic Africa that is both rooted in tradition and adaptable to contemporary realities. By leveraging digital platforms, Africans can re-access indigenous knowledge, challenge the thwarted colonial historiography and facilitate cross-generational dialogue on identity formation (for authentic African identity). Social media, digital archives and online educational initiatives offer spaces for reconstructing authentic history from an African-centered perspective. This is a kind of equipoise through Afrocentricism that enables the full sense of decolonization in Africa and foster other forms of decolonialism or decolonialty.
