ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CYBERSECURITY: NAVIGATING INNOVATION AND VULNERABILITY IN NIGERIA’S DIGITAL LANDSCAPE

Isyaka Mahmud Zirra V. Peter Godwin C. Patricia
Abstract

This paper critically examines the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in both strengthening and compromising cybersecurity within Nigeria, proposing a roadmap that integrates ethical safeguards, policy reform, and capacity-building initiatives. We analyse the risks associated with AI, such as bias in automated decision-making, the risk of over-reliance on machine learning algorithms, and the potential for AI-driven cyber threats like deepfake technology. Moreover, the paper advocates for a balanced regulatory framework tailored to Nigeria’s unique digital ecosystem, one that promotes innovation while remaining cautious against misuse. Through a comprehensive evaluation of global best practices and Nigeria's current cybersecurity policies, we offer actionable recommendations to leverage AI responsibly, ensuring it serves as a safeguard for public welfare and national security. As Nigeria advances its digital transformation agenda, AI has emerged as a double-edged sword in the realm of cybersecurity. On one hand, AI-powered technologies enhance cybersecurity frameworks with real-time threat detection, predictive analytics, and rapid incident response, bolstering digital infrastructure across sectors. On the other hand, these same technologies introduce new vulnerabilities, as adversaries deploy AI to conduct more adaptive and complex attacks. Within Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape, shaped by unique socio-political challenges, these risks are especially acute and demand urgent attention
