BETWEEN PROFESSIONALISM AND PATRIOTISM

Jude I. Onebunne
Abstract

Migration has been a human enterprise necessitated by the desire for a better condition be it of service and or for survival. In our contemporary era amidst global influences and challenges, movement of professionals in different walks of life has been of serious concern to the chagrin of the respect and love for the fatherland. Indeed there is need for cross-breeding of ideas and exchange of programs among professionals with an underlying fact of doing so often for patriotic reasons Professionalism and patriotism are two sides of the socio-economic cum educational coin of any nation in need of cohesive as well as functional-national development. Nigerian case is ever different as most of our professionals lack the natural patriotism with regard to the beneficiary-missionary nature of their profession to their nation. Hence, in Nigeria, professionalism that is divorced of patriotism has been sacrificed at the altar of just mere pecuniary selfishness.
