It has become the culture of universities in the world to talk about awarding degrees in learning and character. The learning aspect is clearly seen in the Ichoice of a course an individual decides to study. A student of philosophy learns how to philosophise by doing. You will engage with the texts, cultivating critical thinking through practicing with the use of argumentation with lecturers, friends during tutorials and consistent self-practice. The learning of philosophy is much easier to evaluate using assessments and examinations. Character is a vital part of human development. It is difficult to inculcate in an individual as it is not always built directly in the curriculum. Any studies that negate the cultivation of character is not completely successfully carried out. This study explains how character formation is better handled with the touch of ethics. The objectives are to show the significance of making character formation a critical moment in the life of an individual, to show that the absence of character in the life of an individual with a society is harmful to the moral values of the community. This is a qualitative research design. The study reveals that paper qualification is valued much more than character in Nigeria, materialism and societal ills are prioritse to the detriment of character of an individual. The paper concludes that education in Nigeria should be refocused on character formation as an essential pathway to combat perennial moral decay, inequality and lack of opportunity. The idea of learning by doing where parents are the first teachers of morality must be encouraged to produce honest, transparent, accountable men and women with self-control, discipline as a hallmark of integrity.
