At various times in history, the poet has been worshipped, honoured, feared, despised, or ignored. Yet always, poets have continued to write and read poems. There are many poets and poetry collections the world over. In Nigeria, for example, the greatest poets over the decades include John Pepper Clark, Chinua Achebe, Christopher Okigbo, Adedayo Agaru, Hussain Ahmed, Niyi Osundare, Hyginus Ekwazi, Aondowase Mnguve, and Kator Sombo, just to mention a few. Poetry is, of course, one form of literature, and literature is, to put it simply, the expression and communication of human experience in meaningful language. Poetry is the language of emotion; its musical rhythms and patterns of sound can make a deeper, more direct impact on the reader than the ordinary language of prose.
