Abstract

This study critically examines the role of Christianity in fostering moral transformation in IfeOdan, a semi-urban community in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria. Anchored in African socio-theological theory and transformational perspectives on religion and morality, this study examines how Christian doctrines, institutions, and practices have shaped ethical conduct, family systems, youth formation, and public morality in Ife-Odan. Data were derived from qualitative methods, including oral interviews with clergy, elders, teachers, and youth leaders, alongside church records and relevant secondary literature. Findings reveal that Christianity has functioned as a vital moral agent by reinforcing indigenous Yoruba ethical values particularly the concept of ìwà (character) while reinterpreting them within a biblical framework centered on holiness, righteousness, and accountability before God. In Ife-Odan, practical examples abound: churches have significantly contributed to the reduction of social vices such as theft, sexual immorality, and youth delinquency through regular Bible teaching, youth fellowships, and mentorship programs. Marriage counseling and church discipline have also strengthened monogamous family structures and reduced domestic conflicts, reflecting biblical principles of love and fidelity. Furthermore, clergy involvement in community dispute resolution has promoted ngs on peacemaking. Despite challenges such as moral relativism, denominational fragmentation, and the pressures of globalization, Christianity continues to serve as a moral compass within the community. The study contributes to African Christian ethics by demonstrating the dynamic interaction between faith, culture, and morality at the grassroots level.
