RELIGIOUS SENTIMENTS AND EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF POWER AND RESOURCES IN NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY: PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES

Enyi Peter Adole Ephrame Ngwan Bitrus Dung Toke
Abstract

Nigeria’s democratic development is deeply influenced by its religious diversity, which significantly impacts the equitable distribution of political power and resources. This paper explores the intricate relationship between religious sentiments and governance in Nigeria, highlighting both the prospects and challenges within the country’s multi-religious democracy. It traces the historical interplay of religion and politics from colonial times to the present, illustrating how religious identities have shaped political alignments, power-sharing arrangements, and resource allocation policies such as the Federal Character Principle. The study identifies critical challenges undermining equitable distribution, including pervasive corruption, elite capture, and violent ethno-religious conflicts most notably the ongoing farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. These conflicts, often framed in religious terms, have led to significant loss of life, disruption of agricultural productivity, and heightened food insecurity, thereby exacerbating regional inequalities. Despite these challenges, the paper highlights promising prospects for fostering equity. Interfaith dialogues, exemplified by the Jos Forum, have demonstrated the potential for peacebuilding and cooperative resource management. Policy innovations such as the Asaba Declaration, alongside social investment programs and decentralized governance, offer frameworks for addressing structural inequities. Additionally, youth-led movements like #EndSARS illustrate the growing influence of civic activism in promoting democratic accountability beyond religious divides. The role of international actors and NGOs in supporting inclusive governance and conflict resolution is also examined. The paper concludes that while religious pluralism presents complex challenges, sustained interfaith engagement, institutional reforms, and active civic participation provide viable pathways toward achieving equitable distribution of power and resources in Nigeria’s democracy.
