CRITICAL SEARCH FOR IGBO PHILOSOPHY IN THE PEOPLES’ CULTURE AND WELTANSCHAUUNG

Jude I. Onebunne, PhD
Abstract

Culture is an essential aspect and an elemental feature in human existential enterprise. Man, fundamentally, having been born into a particular culture, remains a product of that culture. Because he has a unique way of behaving, almost quite different from animals and even fellow men, he’s regarded as a cultural being, animal culturalis. In particular, culture, therefore, is very central to the being of every Igbo person. Philosophy, African Philosophy, in the ageless words of Okere, T. (1983), is the hermeneutics of culture. Igbo people sharing in the idea of being cultural animals, within the ambience of cultural realities, are culture-bound. These Igbo cultural realities, however, spring-forth from the unique, symbolic and conceptual ideas of Onye aghana nwanne ya, Ibu anyi danda, Igwe b? ike, A na-at?t?, Ar?mar?ka, Egbe bere, ugo bere, Ezumezu, et cetera. Moreover, using the method of critical analysis, the researcher finds out that critical interpretation of these cultural realities, as well as traditional experiences and proper application of such in Igbo Weltanschauung, make for Igbo Philosophy. The hermeneutics of Igbo tradition and culture stands for Philosophy and as well Igbo Philosophy qua tale. However, Igbo Philosophy to this extent remains a particular philosophy in African Philosophy.
