THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION: A BIBLICAL THEOLOGY FOR GOVERNANCE AND JUSTICE IN NIGERIA

Rev Fr Williams Peter Awoshori, Ph.D
Abstract

Nigeria had continued to struggle with systemic corruption, weak governance, and social injustice despite its significant Christian population and abundant religious resources. This study had identified a gap between the proclaimed Christian values of the Kingdom of God and their practical application in governance and justice within the nation’s institutions. The paper aimed to articulate a biblical framework in which Kingdom values of justice, righteousness, servant leadership, and accountability could be integrated into Nigerian governance to promote national transformation. A qualitative theological-analytical design had been employed to explore the alliance of biblical texts and socio-political realities. primary data were collected through systematic exegesis of Old and New Testament passages, while secondary data were gathered from scholarly literature, Nigerian church documents, and governance reports. Thematic content analysis had been used to identify core Kingdom values and their relevance to governance and justice issues in Nigeria. The research had revealed that Kingdom principles such as servant leadership, public ethics, prophetic witness, and covenantal accountability were largely absent in Nigeria’s public institutions; it had also demonstrated that contextualised application of these principles through the Church could significantly enhance governance quality and justice delivery. It encouraged theological institutions to develop curricula in public theology and ethics, urged churches to form leadership networks and advocacy platforms, and proposed strategic partnerships with government to influence policy reform. The study concluded that integrating the Kingdom of God into Nigeria’s public sphere offered a viable roadmap for sustainable national transformation rooted in justice, moral integrity, and the holistic welfare of all citizens.
