Agubueze, Onyeka Cosmas
Abstract

This paper explores the intricate relationship between enlightenment movements and the social progress of youth, emphasizing the pivotal role of spiritual ideals in shaping transformative societal changes. Historically, during key periods of enlightenment—such as the Age of Reason, the Protestant Reformation, and the Romantic Era—spiritual and religious principles served as catalysts for educational reform, moral development, and social activism among young generations. By analyzing case studies from different epochs, including the influence of religious thinkers, reformers, and institutions, this study highlights how spiritual ideals fostered values of critical thinking, moral responsibility, and community engagement among youth. Furthermore, the paper examines the dual nature of enlightenment ideals—both as a means of emancipating minds and fostering ethical development—while critically assessing the challenges faced in balancing faith-based perspectives with evolving notions of individual autonomy. Ultimately, this research underscores the enduring significance of spiritual principles in guiding youth toward active participation in social progress, and draws lessons applicable to contemporary faith-based initiatives aimed at youth empowerment and societal betterment.
