Justification by faith alone (sola fide), the hallmark of Protestant theology, has been a subject of intense debate and scrutiny within Christian theology since Reformation on account of its theological complexities and obscurity in the biblical scholarship. Observably, despite its historic fundamentalism, this doctrine of sola fide remains contested, with ongoing debates surrounding its theological implications and relationship to other Christian doctrines. The relevance of sola fide in contemporary Christian discourse necessitates a deeper understanding of its historical and theological development, exclusively given the contentious debates on its biblical foundations and ecclesiastical applications. This study reexamined the doctrine of sola fide from historical perspective, exploring its theological and epistemological underpinning; addressing the need for its comprehensive examination purposely to clarify its theological significance and practical implications in the salvation of humankinds with focuses on the theological stance of Augustine, Anselmian Matrix, and John Wycliffe, Hus, Calvin, Thomas Aquinas and Luther, The study deploys a qualitative research approach, combining historical, theological and literary analysis to develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical and development of sola fide. Significantly, the study enriches Christian theology and ecclesiastical dialogue, underscoring the significance of justification in shaping Christian doctrine and experience by restoring to the church the central doctrine of redemption through divine grace. The findings show that collective insights from these theologians on sola fide have yielded profound theological insights underscoring the pivotal role of faith in Christ’s redemptive work and illuminating the intricate dynamics between faith, works and salvation. The paper, therefore, recommends exploration of sola fide aimed at fostering spiritual growth, informing Christian practice and promoting a more profound appreciation of God’s grace.
