Akamagwuna Ike Femi
Abstract

Previous studies have analysed the functions of noun phrases in different areas but no attention has been given to the analysis of the functions of noun phrases in the Labour Party’s manifesto of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria; hence, the gap this study seeks to fill. This study examined the functions of noun phrases captured in LP’s manifesto of the 2023 general elections. The research design used for the study is a qualitative content analysis which relies on a secondary data. A random sampling method was used to collect and analyse the relevant data of the study. This research is underpinned on MAK Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which it uses to analyse how the noun phrases portrayed in the manifesto function as subject, object and complement. The finding of the study shows that the manifesto contains numerous noun phrases that function as subjects of different sentences. In the same vein, the finding of the study reveals how noun phrases also function as objects and complements (subject and object complements) as indicated in the LP manifesto of the 2023 general elections. This study concludes that the Noun Phrases (NP) captured in the manifesto are used by the Presidential Candidates of Labour Party (Peter Obi and Ahmed Datti) to reveal the intentions/promises of the politicians to Nigerians if voted into power.
