THEOLOGICAL STUDY OF RELIGION IN NIGERIA AS A CORRECTIVE TO MISGUIDED RELIGIOUS PRACTICE

Abstract

This paper argues that the lack of theological studies of religion in Nigeria has fostered a culture of an enthusiastic practice of religion without reason, ethics or love. Through historical, descriptive, critical and analytical methods, it invites the Nigerian culture and educational system to take a cue from Christianity’s pristine identity from its Greco- Roman heritage as a veritable synthesis of faith, reason and charity. A theological study of religion studies religion beyond comparative and phenomenological levels to take seriously the faith tradition of each religion and promote a more rational and critical engagement of religious practice in a way that makes it responsible for its theological identity.
