The Relevance and Challenges of Classical Languages in Priestly Formation in Priestly Formation

Kenneth A. Adesina, Ph.D
Abstract

More than mere tools for verbal communication, languages preserve the impressions, affections and culture of those who speak them. Thus, the closest we can ever get to the reality somebody has expressed is by seeking an understanding of his language. This paper examines the relevance of classical and biblical languages in priestly formation, showing how a good knowledge of Latin, Greek and Hebrew gives a direct and undiluted access to the depth of grace, spirituality and culture offered in the scripture and in the Church Fathers. How can future priests gain an undiluted access to the Church?s sources and experiences of faith? This paper is an attempt not only to justify and attract attention to these languages, but more importantly a presentation of some challenges encountered in learning them and some solutions that can mitigate such challenges.
