Ethnic-Nationalism and Politics of Recognition in Africa: Towards a Multicultural Ideology

Oreoluwa Idris Adesanya
Abstract

The African continent has been deeply enmeshed in several cases of interethnic rivalries, ethno-national militarism, and as a consequence, political instability and gruesome conflicts and violent attacks, most of which are triggered by situations of inter-ethnic deprivation, segregation, idiosyncrasies, and the political dominance of one or more ethnic nationalities by a particular or some certain ethnic groups. The crises of Ethnic-Nationalism in several African states have thereby given rise to the politics of ethno-national recognition across the continent, which is also linked to the lingering problem of underdevelopment experienced in most African states. This paper thereby proposes the adoption of multiculturalism as an ideology for cultural diversity, which can be deployed in protecting the various cultural values, socio-political and economic interests of each ethnic-nationality within all African states, thereby promoting and accommodating cultural diversity across the continent. The accommodation of cultural diversity is expected to in turn yield socio-political and economic development as well as foster peaceful inter-ethnic coexistence on the continent.
