In the history of western philosophy, much attentions have been given to two prominent philosopher among many ancient thinkers and this is because of the role they have played in shaping and contributing to the development of western philosophical tradition. More eminently is the consideration of Aristotle especially in respect to his contribution to Metaphysics. Aristotle though did not use the concept metaphysics to designate his works but nonetheless gave two definitions to what is today known as metaphysics. That is, metaphysics as the science of Being qua Being, and metaphysics as the science of the highest substance. This paper examines critically these two definitions given by Aristotle, and establishes their connections as well as how one lead to the other and also the tension between the two possible senses in which Metaphysics can be conceived according to Aristotle. The paper concludes by establishing the contemporary importance of Aristotle’s conceptions of metaphysics.
