The Church and the Disceernment of Present-Day Moral Theology in the Light of Veritatis Splendor
One of the most controversial documents in recent times in the Church is Veritatis Splendor and this is because of the sensitive issues the encyclical addresses. Pope John Paul II in this document calls us to reflect on the fundamental teachings of the Church on some basic moral issues like Law and Freedom, conscience and truth, moral act, fundamental option and so on. These issues have evoked so many reactions especially among contemporary moral theologians. Thus, this paper critically reviews chapter two of this document, and examines the many reactions to the issues raised, and states the task of the Church in this regard, and also reveals the Church’s gift of discernment regarding moral issues and thereby establishing the African Moral theology today.
