Abstract

This paper explores the Igbo bioethics of mkpomkpo ndụ ka mkpomkpo ọnwụ mma (a scrap of life is better than a scrap of death) in comparative analysis with Afromodal critique of western practice of euthanasia. Life and death are two extremes with relational intersections. One inititates the other and each one is implicated in the other. Hence, life becomes a coefficient of death. Death becomes what we are anytime that we are not. Approach to each of them maters most. Through such approaches, people react to life and death accordingly. This paper explores methodologically the African byword, and in particular, the Igbo bioethics Mkpomkpo Ndụ ka Mkpomkpo Ọnwụ Mma in comparative analysis with Western practise of Euthanasia begins with proper appreciation of life as ndu and death as onwu in their scrap or remnant form. In this comparative analysis, one finds out the value Igbo ethics placed on life as a sacred thing as against western concept of Euthanasia.
