THE ABSENCE OF PHILOSOPHY IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: CONCERNS FOR THE FUTURE OF A NATION

Ikechukwu Anthony KANU
Abstract

The dawn of the modern world’s progress on the provisions of post-modernity, progress in science and technology and advancements of disciplines within the social sciences have continued to undermine the place of philosophy, often described as abstract, non-professional and non-lucrative. Thus, scholars have criticized philosophy for concerning itself with the same reality or thoughts over the centuries beginning from the time of the ancients to the contemporary period, and therefore, non-progressive. These criticisms, not withstanding, this paper has studied the fundamental place that philosophy occupies in nation building, and, therefore, why it cannot be compromised in university or tertiary education. It has also studied the state of affairs regarding the absence of this course in many Nigerian universities with clear consequences on the future of the development of the nation. This work argued that the state of affairs calls for an emergency, not only for the introduction of philosophy to Nigerian universities but also the primary and secondary schools’ levels. For the purpose of this study, the critical, analytical and thematic methods of inquiry were employed.
