HEIDEGGER’S CONCEPT OF ART AND THE AFRICAN CONCEPT OF ART: AN INSIGHT INTO THE DISCOURSE OF BEING AND TRUTH

Ugwu, A. Kingsley Ngwoke, H. Chimezie Ozoemena, L. Chigozie
Abstract

In this paper, we set out to make a comparative study of the Heideggerian and the African conceptions of Art. Questions as to whether there is more to just aesthetics in Arts, have recently dominated philosophic discussions among philosophers. It is in response to this that we argue in this paper that Art is not just an expression of aesthetics to both conceptions, but also has been a vehicle carrying truth, history, ideals of identity and cultural values and means through which being is revealed. The expectation from the paper is to see how similar, though from different cultural backgrounds, the Heideggerian is related to the African conceptions of what Art could mean and imply. The paper applies a comparative design and critical analysis method.
