Ogelenya, G. Alumona, C. M.
Abstract

The rapid advancement of genetic engineering technologies has brought humanity to a critical crossroads in reproductive medicine, particularly regarding the creation of "designer babies." This paper examines the complex ethical landscape surrounding genetic enhancement of human embryos, analyzing both the transformative potential and inherent risks of this emerging technology. Through critical analysis, we explore key ethical considerations including reproductive autonomy, social justice, equitable access, and the preservation of human diversity. The study delves into specific challenges such as the risk of creating socioeconomic disparities in genetic enhancement access, potential unforeseen consequences of genetic modifications, and the delicate balance between medical advancement and ethical responsibility. Drawing from current literature and ethical frameworks, we evaluate how society can responsibly approach genetic enhancement while safeguarding human dignity and ensuring equitable development. This work contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the future of human genetic modification by proposing a balanced approach that acknowledges both the promising medical benefits and the crucial need for ethical oversight and regulatory frameworks.
